USS Rushmore (LSD-47)

Commanding Officer COMMANDER CATHAL S. O'CONNOR
USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47) is the seventh of the Whidbey Island (LSD 41) class ships to be commissioned and the second U.S. Navy ship to bear that name. RUSHMORE's mission is to support from the sea and ashore the joint and combined war on terror, while staying ready in all respects to meet other operational requirements.

Operating across the full spectrum of conflict, from Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations (HA/DR) through the Vessel Boarding Search and Seizure Operations (VBSS) conducted in support of Expanded Maritime Interception Operations (E-MIO) and Maritime Security Operations (MSO) to conducting, prompt and sustained combat operations from the sea, the men and women of RUSHMORE are prepared to rapidly deploy overseas on little notice in support of the Navy’s Fleet Response Plan. Specifically designed to transport, land and sustain forces ashore, RUSHMORE launches landing craft (LCAC, LCU, LCM, LARC, AAV), boats (11M RHIB, CRRC), and helicopters (AH-1, UH-1, AH-6, MH-6, CH-60, HH-60, MH-60, V-22, CH-46, CH-47, CH-53, MH-53) in coordinated sea and air operations from her well deck, boat deck and flight deck. Armed with a combination of crew served weapons (.50 caliber machine guns, 25mm guns) and the Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) which connects radars, information warfare systems, missiles and electrically fired machine guns via a fiber-optic local area network (LAN), RUSHMORE conducts operations from over the horizon to hundreds of yards from the coast. Serving as an Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB) for joint, coalition and interagency forces and personnel, RUSHMORE's brings an advanced fiber optic local area network (LAN), Super High Frequency (SHF) and Extremely High Frequency (EHF) satellite communications systems which enable us to rapidly share intelligence we collect and operations we conduct with our commanders at sea and at shore. In addition the 20- and 60 ton cranes, expanded repair shop facilities, two helicopter landing spots, complete medical and dental spaces, and automated, computer based logistic support enable RUSHMORE to support both the maritime forces of emerging partner nations as well as our allies, coalition partners and close friends.
